Depression

  • Most people experience some form of depression at some point in their lives.
  • It can range from a minor problem to a major life-threatening illness.
  • At 1st, self care may be enough to pull you out of depression. So follow these steps for 2wks-
  1. Get moving even though you are not in mood. Do exercise to have more energy, lose tension, feel better.
  2. Think of things that you enjoy & do them, like listening to music, walk the dog. You might have to push yourself at 1st, but it will help you feel better.
  3. Reach out- contact friends or family to relieve your lonely feelings as depression thrives on isolation.
  4. Eat healthy, eat regular sized portions.
  5. Stop substance abuse like caffeine, alcohol, or illegal drugs as medicine for depressed feelings. They can make things worse & interfere with medicines.
  6. Herb St.John’s wort may be effective for mild to moderate depression, but it is not regulated by FDA & can change effectiveness of other medicines. So discuss with doctor.
  7. Be positive- tell yourself you are doing the right things to lighten your mood. Resume pleasurable activities or connect with friends and remind yourself daily of these positive trends.
  • If self-care tips doesn’t work, then professional help may be needed and good news is that medical treatment can relieve these symptoms. Treatment includes counseling, self care & medicines.

  2. showing little interest or pleasure in activities you used to enjoy(including sex).

Hypertension/high blood pressure(BP)

  • Blood pressure is the force/pressure of blood against artery walls.
  • If have high BP, heart has to work harder than it needs to send blood throughout the body.
  • It has no symptoms that you can feel, but increases chances of having stroke, heart attack, & kidney disease.
  • Good news is, you can make changes to lower it, like eating right, doing exercise, taking medications if need to.
  • Adult levels in mmHg(millimeters of mercury): Normal systolic- 119 or less, diastolic- 79 or less. Prehypertension systolic- 120-139, diastolic- 80-89. Hypertension systolic- 140 or higher, diastolic- 90 or higher. If have diabetes/chronic kidney disease, systolic- 130 or higer, diastolic – 80 or higher.
  • Systolic pressure is the force of blood against arteries when heart is sending blood to body & diastolic is when heart relaxes between beats. Both numbers are important. Keep a blood pressure monitor at home.
  • Obesity, alcohol, family history, eating too much salt, getting older, stress may cause hypertension.
  • For stress, consider walking, dancing, tai chi, yoga, or meditation.
  • Eat whole grains, vegetables, fruits, low fat milk products, lean meat & beans.

Cholesterol

  • If too high, you could be heading for a heart attack or stroke without knowing it if have other risk factors too(lack of exercise, smoking, high BP, diabetes, heart disease, genetic heart disease/stroke, age over 45 for men & 55 for women, obese). So take steps to reduce it.
  • Cholesterol is a waxy substance that travels in bloodstream.
  • The higher the cholesterol is, the more likely some cholesterol will build up in walls of blood vessels and make them narrower/block the blood flow. The decrease in blood flow/blockage could cause heart attack or stroke.
  • Cholesterol can be checked by a blood test.
  • Total cholesterol includes LDL & HDL cholesterol, as well as other fats in the blood stream. It shd be lower than 200.
  • LDL/bad cholesterol builds up in walls of blood vessels. It shd be lower than 100.
  • HDL/good cholesterol helps rid the body of excess cholesterol. It shd be 40 or higher.
  • The more fat you eat, the more cholesterol your body makes, so as 1st step, try to lower fat. Foods from bottom half of the pyramid are lower in fat & cholesterol. Take fat free dairy products, limit non-veg food & eat dried beans, lentils or tofu instead. Choose fish, chicken/turkey breast, lean red meat as side dishes.
  • Eat 5servings of fruits & vegs/day. Include at each meal & snack times. Many are high in the type of fiber that helps lower cholesterol.
  • Eat high fiber foods like corn tortillas, brown rice, whole grain breads & cereals. Build meals around bread, cereal, rice & pasta.
  • B.fast- Try fruit/100% fruit juice, oatmeal or other whole grain cereal, whole wheat toast/bagel with jam/low fat cream cheese, egg white scrambled.
  • Lunch- corn tortillas with beans, rice with steamed vegetables, fat free curd/milk, salad/pasta & veg salad with 1t each oil & vinegar, vegetable/minestrone/bean soup, spaghetti with tomato sauce & 1oz parmesan, beans curry, baked potato, whole wheat pita/bread/roll/tortilla.
  • Lunch sidedish- 3oz stir fried tofu/lean meat, 1chicken burrito with beans, cheese/sour cream, 3oz baked/ broiled/steamed fish.
  • Snack- fruit, english muffin/bagel, pretzels/reduced fat crackers, low fat popcorn, graham crackers.
  • Dessert- non fat pudding, ice cream or frozen yogurt.
  • Choose canola oil/olive oil, light margarine, mayo, salad dressing. Avoid coconut/palm oil/butter/lard.
  • Limit olives, avocados, coconut as high in fat.
  • Your daily cholesterol shd be less than 300mg.
  • Look for low saturated fat, as raises cholesterol level the most. It is found mostly in animal foods.
  • Broil, roast, bake, steam, or microwave fish & meats.
  • Deskin chicken & turkey as has more fat.
  • Cook in wine/broth instead of fat.
  • Use nonstick pans & cooking sprays.
  • Flavor foods with herbs & butter flavored powders, lemon juice, flavored vinegar, onion, garlic, peppers.
  • Chill soups & stews, skim off fat & reheat.
  • Replace cream in desserts with fat-free condensed milk.
  • Use low fat cottage cheese/sour cream to make dips & toppings.
  • Use low fat buttermilk/yogurt in salad dressings.
  • Use 2egg whites in place of 1egg.
  • Choose soups made of broths.
  • In American restaurants- choose green salad with vegetables & light dressing, broiled hamburger with k.up, mustard, tomato & lettuce, broiled/baked fish/meats, meat sandwiches with mustard instead of mayo.
  • In fast food restaurants- choose broiled/grilled chicken sandwich, broiled hamburger, soft tacos, chicken/bean burrito, garden salad with light dressing, baked potato with chives.
  • In mexican restaurants- choose rice with chicken, chicken/fish fajita, chicken/bean burrito, marinated raw fish (ceviche), beans & rice, soft tacos, chicken tostada with beans(skip fried tortilla shell).
  • In Italian restaurants- choose minestrone soup, pasta with tomato sauce & vegs (primavera), fish stew (cioppino), broiled/grilled fish, chicken cacciatore, ravioli/tortellini/gnocchi in tomato sauce, pizza with vegetable toppings.
  • In Asian restaurants- soups made with broth, steamed pot stickers/dumplings, fish/chicken/tofu cooked in broth or steamed with vegetables, sushi/sashimi, yakitori, steamed rice/noodle dishes, thai seafood stew.
  • Exercise can help raise HDL, as well as weight. Walking, swimming, bike riding are good.
  • Smoking lowers HDL cholesterol & may also damage the lining of blood vessels.
  • High BP wears down the lining of blood vessels. Exercise, maintaining healthy weight, eating less salt lowes BP.
  • Diabetes can damage the walls of blood vessels. Exercise, eat low fat diet, maintain healthy weight.
  • Stress can increase BP & heart rate, which causes damage to blood vessels.
  • If less fat diet & exercise doesn’t lower cholesterol, medications need to be taken.

Home remedies

  1. Acid stomach: Try eating smaller meals freq’tly & avoid midnight snacking. Eat plenty of fresh fruits & veggies, avoid hot spices, alcohol, coffee, carbonated drinks.
  2. Acne: Better leave it alone. But, if you must, pop with sterile guaze, rinse well with h20 to prevent spread of infection. Wash mor & ev with oil-free cleanser/mild soap. Excercise to aid circulation & elimination. Use deodorants instead of antiperspirants, as the latter s’times inhibit elimination by blocking sweat glands. Eat whole foods, fruits & veggies. Avoid fats, sugars, junk food. Increase Zn intake by eating fish, whole grains, cereals.
  3. Allergy/hay fever/rhinitis: Vacuum carpets often, exercise freq’tly. VitC with biflavanoids acts as a natural antihistamine. Take pollen supplements few wks before the season starts for prevention.
  4. Blisters: Apply petroleum jelly to areas of skin that are most likely to be affected. Wear thick cotton socks for sports. If u’ve blister, try to let it heal on it’s own. If about to burst, puncture with sterilized(with alcohol or flame) needle, trying to keep the skin intact. Bandage it by day & let it breathe & dry out at night.
  5. Boils: Indicate inadequate diet/Zn deficiency.
  6. Burns: Hold burn under warm to cool h20(very cold h20 may change a 2degree to 3degree burn). Apply lavender oil, cover with sterile dressing. Repeat application every 24hrs. Aloe vera juice is known to reduce pain & promote healing of burns.
  7. Cold: Low fat, high fiber diet helps boost immune system. Take vitC foods like citrus, melons etc.
  8. Conjunctivitis: Highly infectious, so don’t share towels, etc. Cover eyes with cool, moist tea bag to soothe the itch. Wash eyes gently with warm h20 & apply topical medicines per doctors advice.
  9. Cough: Honey+tea+lots of ginger.
  10. Flu: Don’t underestimate it as rarely it can be deadly too. Take vit C & Zn. Avoid aspirin during illness. Get flu shot.
  11. Hangover: Taking B-complex vits before party may help. Drink plenty of h20 to avoid dehydration. Eating carbs may help relieve symptoms. Or whip together a banana+1gl milk+honey.

If any redness develops in the area, see doctor imm’ly.
  15. Menstrual cramps: Take a warm bath or hold a hot h20 bottle/castor oil pack against abdomen. Take vit B6 daily. Do yoga.
  16. Nosebleeds: If coming freq’tly, increase intake of vitC as strengthens bl.vessels.
  17. PMS: Take vit B6, vitE, Mg.
  18. Sore throat: Drink plenty of fruit juices, avoid milky drinks. Take vitC, Zn. Gargle as many times possible salt h20/lemon h20. Drink tea with honey & lemon.
  19. Sty: Get few of these when imminity is low. Take Zn, vitC. Pluck off offending eye-lash. Place a cold, soaked teabag over sty. Apply warm compresses often & use topical antibiotics.
  20. Sunburn: Apply aloe vera gel & take a cool shower. Apply baking soda+fine oatmeal/vinegar+h20 to skin for sootheness. Calamine lotion & OTC creams are helpful too.

Eye exercises

Eye exercising will keep your eyes healthy and help minimize eyestrain. 

  • It’s more important to do the exercises regularly than to do them for a long time. Even 30-60 seconds of eye movement every hour is very helpful.
  • Taking short breaks from near work (e.g. staring at a computer monitor) to stare out to the distance also relieves some strain.
  • Palming is a good method to help your eyes feel better. You close your eyes and put you palms over them, this will rest your eyes.
  • Blink the eyes many times.
  • Splash your eyes with cold water repeatedly when feasible, and especially when your eyes are strained.
  1. Sit comfortably on a chair. Rub your hands together until they feel warm. Close your eyes and cover them lightly with your cupped palms. Avoid applying pressure on your eyeballs. Place your palms so that the nose remains uncovered, and the eyes remain behind the slight hollow of the palms. Make sure that no light rays enter the eyes, and leave no gaps between fingers or between the edge of the palms and the nose. You may still see other lingering traces of colors. Imagine deep blackness and focus on the blackness. Take deep breaths slowly and evenly, while thinking of some happy incident; or visualize a distant scene. After your eyes see nothing but blackness, remove your palms from your eyes. Repeat the palming for 3 minutes or more.
  2. Close your eyes tightly for 3-5 seconds, then open them for 3-5 seconds. Repeat this 7 or 8 times.
  3. Close your eyes and massage them with circular movements of your fingers for 1-2 minutes. Make sure you press very lightly; otherwise, you could hurt your eyes.
  4. Press three fingers of each hand against your upper eyelids, and hold them there for 1-2 seconds, then release. Repeat 5 times.
  5. Sit and relax. Roll your eyes clockwise, then counter-clockwise. Repeat 5 times, and blink in between each time.
  6. Sit about 6 inches (200 mm) from the window. Make a mark on the glass at your eye level (a small sticker, black or red, would be perfect). Look through this mark and focus on something far away for 10-15 seconds; then focus on the mark again.
  7. Hold a pencil in front of you at arm’s length. Move your arm slowly to your nose, and follow the pencil with your eyes until you can keep it in focus. Repeat 10 times.
  8. Look in front of you at the opposite wall and pretend that you are writing with your eyes, without turning your head. It may seem difficult at first, but with a bit of practice it is really fun. The bigger the letters, the better the effect.
  9. Imagine that you are standing in front of a really big clock. Look at the middle of the clock. Then look at any hour mark, without turning your head. Look back at the center. Then look at another hour mark. Do this at least 12 times. You can also do this exercise with your eyes closed.
  10. Focus on a distant object (over 150 feet or 50 m away) for several seconds and slowly refocus your eyes on a nearby object (less than 30 feet or 10 m away) that’s in the same direction. Focus for several seconds and go back to the distant object. Do this 5 times.
  11. Focus on an object in the distance (as far as possible) with a low contrasting background. Do this for a few minutes every half hour or so. This does not improve your vision, nor does any other technique. It can, however, maintain your best eyesight level during the day and prevent significant further vision deterioration.

How to lead a happy life?

1. Health and fitness is one of the most basic criteria towards a happy life. You need to be healthy to fully appreciate and benefit from any wealth that you earn, the love and good relationships in your life, or to be able to pursue any meaningful endeavor at all.

Money, or career achievements are meaningless if you don’t have the health (or life) to enjoy it. Good health is the prerequisite to any other areas of happiness.

Exercises can be fun and enjoyable. Start by going at a pace that you can do relaxingly, and as your fitness improves, increase your training level accordingly.

The benefits of a healthy body go beyond physical aspects. A healthy body enables a healthy mind; a clearer frame of mind, be more alert, focus and effective during the day.

A strong and fit body leads to a heightened sense of well-being and confidence.

To lead a happy life, start taking care of your health if you are not already doing so by looking after your lifestyle, your diet. It’s not difficult, you just need a little conviction, some little small efforts, some small successes, and understand that it’s important before your health fails you and it’s too late.

2. Financial stability is the 2nd key to happiness which give you freedom to do what you truly desire to with your life. Although getting what you desire makes you happy for a while, it’s not a sustainable long-term strategy. When it comes to money and happiness, simplicity is best. Live within your means and not overstretch yourself by spending beyond what you can afford to. Make it a point to save and invest a portion of what you earn to increase your net worth over time. The greater your net worth is, the greater your freedom.

3. Another key to happiness is constructive, mutually supportive relationships with people in your life.

We want to be loved and appreciated; we want someone who understands and supports us. We want a happy family. We want friends who understand, are supportive and will be there for us in times of need. We want colleagues who are not demanding, not selfish, and perhaps even fun to work with. But it is so hard; people are hard to get along with. The way that people act towards you is actually a reaction to what you do. People treat you differently based on how they perceive you. This is often working at the sub-conscious level, and the people themselves may not be fully aware of it. So depending on how you treat other people, how you present and carry yourself, others will react to you and treat you accordingly.  So instead of putting the blame on the other party, or other people, look inwards at yourself and ask what is it that you can do to influence the person and bring about the quality relationship that you desire.

  • If your boss does not trust you or value you highly, ask yourself how you can increase your credibility and value add so that she can trust you or value you highly
  • If you think your spouse is not understanding or loving you, ask yourself how you can express your love for him/her more often
  • If you are constantly bullied in school, ask yourself how you can stopping behaving like a whimsical pushover, and develop true inner strength in character
  • If you desire loyal friends who will stand by you, ask yourself how you can first be loyal and supportive to your friends, who stands by them in their times of need.

Indeed, you cannot control what others do and how they treat you. However, by working on your own behaviors and actions, you can always influence how people act towards you. Genuinely constructive and supportive relationships takes two parties to establish, instead of waiting passively for the other party to change, start by acting positively yourself to kick start the change, and you will often be pleasantly surprised to see positive results coming back.

4. Having purpose in life is another key for happiness.

Let’s try to imagine that you have all the money that you need in the world, a healthy body and the most loving spouse, family and friends surrounding you. Will you be happy? The answer is a surprising “NO”.

Sure, it may feels good for a while, but after some time, nothing excites you anymore and you wonder what to do next. It will feel like there is nothing to look forward to; each day seems the same as the previous one, and time starts to drag. Life is meaningless, it feels empty…

What you lack is purpose. A sense or reason for living.  It basically is what you find as meaningful work in your daily life. It is work that you enjoy doing (even if you are not paid for it), because you believe it improve someone’s life, make the world better, or is valuable in some ways. It is the type of work which you can do for as long as you live, solely because it’s meaningful to you, and gives you a sense of accomplishment.

If you are having difficulties finding your purpose, don’t be discouraged. Try out different things in life and follow your heart. Somehow, your heart will tell you when you have struck the pot of gold.

  10. Cold- Ginger tea is a folk remedy for cold. 4leaves of tulsi taken along with a piece of ginger on an empty stomach is an effective cure for congestion, cold.
  11. Cough- Red pepper. It has a substance similar to one in cough syrup.
  12. Depression- Hypericum/St.John’s wart are good for +ve mood, emotional balance, major depression.
  13. Diarhoea- Apple after turns brown
  14. Digestive health- Ginger is used frequently for dyspepsia & colic. Green papaya fruit is rich in enzyme Papain, a protease which is helpful in tenderizing meat and other proteins, so good for digestive problems.
  15. Gingivitis- Cranberries reduce the amount of dental plaque causing oral bacteria, thus being prophylaxis for gingivitis.
  16. Hayfever- curd during season.
  17. Headache- Fish prevents & ginger applied as paste to temples reduces pain.

  25. Menopausal symptoms- Black cohosh/cimicifuga increases blood flow to pelvic area. Tannin in it inhibits iron absorption, so use with caution.
  26. Mucous membrane tonic- Golden seal. Note that it does not have to come in contact with the mucous membranes to have this effect. Hold some goldenseal in your mouth for a minute or two, and you can feel the effect on the mucous membranes in your nose and sinuses. Traditional doctors stated that goldenseal increases the secretion of the mucous membranes. At the same time, goldenseal contains astringent factors, which also counter that flow. Thus it was referred to as a mucous membrane “alterative”, increasing deficient flow but decreasing excessive flow.
