Router

October 7, 2007 RENU

  1. Without router, there’s no internet.
  2. They r specialized comps that let msg’s flow betn networks rather than within network  along 1000’s of pathways.
  3. Each info pkt sent from comp is seen by all other comps on local network which chks if it was meant for its address. But as network size increases there will be performance issues as some people might send very big graphic files which use up most of networks capacity making network run slow. Then router has to direct traffic.
  4. Router connects ur comps to 1 another & when connected to modem/DSL/dial up, multiple comp’s can share 1 connection to internet.
  5. Internet data travels over pkg switching network where data is broken into pkgs of 1500bytes long, each with details of pkgs place in the entire msg, etc. If there is problem with 1pc of eqpt in network while msg being transferred, pkts r routed in diff way.
