Linux

September 22, 2007 RENU

Even though Linux has 100’s of cmds to perform most basic tasks, u need to know a dozen. Linux is case sensitive, so filenames shd be typed carefully. Black window represents Linux cmd line interface. When u type cmds (always in lower case) at “Directory>” prompt, it lists contents.
1. Is: Most often used. Lists directory contents in alphabetical order from left to right. Linux will allow long file names but better shorten it.
2. More: To view contents of file. Ex: more chimps. It is called more b’cos after it displays a page of txt, it pauses & puts “–More–: at bottom of secreen to let u know that there is more txt yet to be shown. To see next page of txt, hit spacebar.
3: mkdir: Make directory, means creating directory. ex: mkdir dogs
